Our top 5 FAQs on family photoshoots

We get asked a lot of questions when we start talking with first time clients. We understand that it’s hard to know exactly what to expect from your first photo session. Here are My Little Tribe, we will guide you all the way. Here are the top 5 most frequent questions we get asked.

How does a family photo shoot at My Little Tribe work?

Firstly, we’ll have a discussion on the phone and take you through our whole process and if that’s all sounding great, you choose your dates, book in, and fill out our getting-to-know-you questionnaire. This gives us some insight into your family and what makes you tick so that we can genuinely connect with you.

We’ll confirm your shoot the week prior to your shoot and then give you a call a couple of days before the big day to confirm the timing and locations.

On the day of the shoot we all meet, chat, laugh and take a few (hundred) photos. Each session lasts between anywhere between 1 to 2 hours, which allows for little people needing snacks, nappy changes and hugs.

About two weeks later, we’ll invite you back to our studio to view your images. We like to treat this as a special occasion for you both - you’ll indulge in a night off from the kids… a glass of vino and will have around two hours to go through your images and choose your favourites.

You decide which images you’d like and how you’d like to display them and we’ll work with our seriously talented suppliers to print and package your products.

And 4-6 weeks later you get to unwrap your gorgeous new masterpiece and give it pride of place in your family home.

What should we wear for our family photo shoot?

You’ll already know the location of your shoot and you’ll have a rough idea of the weather (we say rough, because of course in Melbourne you just never know for sure).

And we get that deciding what to wear can be somewhat stressful. Because this is a family photo shoot, you want to make sure that you and your kids are the focal points. Really bright outfits, obvious brand names or super-matching tend to draw attention away from the people in the photo. Neutral, comfortable clothing will allow you and your family to shine.

But at the end of the day dress like you!

What is the best location for a family photo shoot?

Our photography sessions can be held at a location of your choice. We love photographing families in the comfort of their own homes and garden. We can also do the session around your neighbourhood or at a park you frequently go to - there's something lovely about kids feeling comfortable in and familiar with their surroundings and having photos that capture what might be a typical day for your family.

Of course, we are always up for an adventure! If you have somewhere you'd like to try in mind. Choose from your local beach, a leaf-filled park or your favourite family hangout (sometimes we can arrange to go to your holiday house!).

What if the Melbourne weather turns on us?

Four seasons in one day – that’s Melbourne’s weather for you. We have seen it all here at My Little Tribe.

If you have chosen to go with an outdoor shoot and the weather is lousy and rainy, we will reschedule, or we can move the session to our studio in Elsternwick. Your kids and pets will feel at home, we have toys toilets, dressing rooms and other amenities that can help make your shoot relaxing.

If it’s a scorcher, we will look for shade in our chosen location or start nice and early in the morning before it gets too unbearable!

What if my children are having a bad day?

Photographing young children and sometimes animals can be challenging, especially in an outside environment where they can’t be contained.

But luckily, we have Grant our resident photographer who is often referred to as “King of the Kids”. Our photo shoots are full of laughter and silliness and are centred around what makes your family unique.

We have decades of experience photographing kids, couples, families and even a few furry friends, so we have seen it all and have plenty of techniques to keep your kids happy.
